TANIA

Tania, another Asian elephant, was brought to France and housed alone there for 24 years. Relocated to Spain, France (again) and Italy, in 2012 she finally ended up in Tirgu Mures Zoo in Romania. Recent attempts to keep her with other elephants have failed owing perhaps to her mental state having been kept alone for so long. Despite improvements to her enclosure, it remains lacking in essential features and her continued isolation has led to visible stereotypic behaviour.

TWIGGY

Twiggy, an Asian elephant, had been moved between five different zoos in Britain throughout the 1960s–70s, before eventually ending up in Serbia in 1990. She has been alone in Belgrade Zoo since 1997. Currently, she is housed in a small grassed but bare paddock without any trees, structures or enrichment and surrounded by a dangerous moat. Her indoor enclosure is essentially a concrete box room.

POLE POLE

Pole Pole, a two year old African elephant, was caught in 1969 as a gift for London Zoo by the then Kenyan government. Before being sent away, she briefly starred in the film An Elephant Called Slowly (1970) with Virginia McKenna and her husband Bill Travers. After filming was complete, despite protestations by the couple to have her returned to the wild, she was sent to London as planned. After suffering there for years, five of them on her own, she was put down at the young age of 16. Her death led Virginia and Bill to launch what later became the Born Free Foundation.
